Glorious Victory
Exodus 12:31-32 Then he (Pharaoh) called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, “Rise, go out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel. And go, serve the LORD as you have said. 32 Also take your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone; and bless me also.”
Exodus 12:35-36 Now the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked from the Egyptians articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing. 36 And the LORD had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested. Thus they plundered the Egyptians.
Glory and victory go together. The Lord knew that Pharaoh would not listen to Moses. Yet, He assigned Moses a series of instructions and actions to follow knowing that he probably would not be successful. The key to understanding this tactic lies in the Lord’s compassion and mercy. All along, he knew that deliverance for Israel would come at the cost of the death of the firstborn in Egypt. Yet, He gave Pharaoh nine opportunities to repent of his stubbornness before taking this extreme action.
Moses stood firm even when Pharaoh continued to refuse to surrender to the Word of the Lord. We see hardness of heart so often today we forget the danger it holds for us. No one can hold back the Glory forever. It’s hard to be ridiculed. It’s hard to be ignored or to have your words refuted or discredited. Moses trusted himself to God’s timing. While the Lord allowed an opportunity for mercy to prevail, Moses endured the mockery of the Egyptians. Eventually judgement fell and with it came dreadful woe.
Death passed through Egypt and in a single night took the firstborn of every family, even in the house of Pharaoh. But death “passed over” the Israelites. The Passover is a sign of God’s Glory both in Judgment and in Deliverance. It was costly, terrifying and fatal to the Egyptians. But, for Israel it was Salvation. Israel was spared from the Destroyer and delivered from death through the of blood of lambs painted over the doorpost of their homes. This event foreshadows, of course, the great victory won by the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ upon the Cross of Calvary.
Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron to attend him that same night and he released them to leave Egypt with all of Israel. When they prepared to go, he asked for their blessing. He recognized that the God of Moses was mightier than the gods of the Egyptians. The Lord God had humbled Pharaoh. God’s Glory is always the highest revelation that can be seen in any situation. No matter the battle, all opposition will eventually bow in surrender to His Majesty.
Philippians 2:9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Israel departed Egypt in freedom, rich with the treasures given them by the Egyptians. They passed through the Red Sea and came to Mount Sinai where they received the Covenant of the Law to become God’s own people. Moses went up the mountain and standing in the very Presence and Glory of God and received the 10 Commandments written on tablets of stone by the finger of God.
When we stand through adversity we will eventually stand in the Glory.

How do you face opposition? Do you give up, get depressed, get mad or shout a lot? Reflect on the process of Israel’s deliverance. Even though it came to Judgement, God’s Mercy was demonstrated in the delay. God is at work even while we simmer in frustration. Our human adversaries are not likely to be visited with judgement and we should not wish it so. But, maybe the Lord will surprise us both by showing great mercy when He reveals Himself to them. If we stop standing now we may miss the Glory.
Let’s continue to stand against all opposition and resistance we face to allow the Lord to work in our behalf.
Ephesians 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God (Clothing ourselves in Christ), that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
