A Divine Call
Exodus 3:7-10 And the LORD said: “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. 8 So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”
Exodus 3:11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
Exodus 3:12 So He said, “I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”
From within the burning bush the Angel of the Lord spoke to Moses. First He called Moses by name. Then He reminded him of his lineage. When God spoke of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to Moses it was as if hundreds of years had not passed from the time He first spoke the Promise. The Covenant God made with Abraham and his descendants was about to turn the nations on their head.
This delay gives us insight into the Ways of God. The slavery experienced by Israel in Egypt, was part of God’s greater purpose to bless Abraham’s descendants while still remaining just to the inhabitants of Canaan. In His grace, He held back judgement for 400 years to allow the Canaanites the opportunity to repent of their sin before He finally would lead Israel to that land to dispossess and conquer them.
Genesis 15:13-16 Then He [God] said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 15 Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. 16 But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
He is God. He is just. He is merciful. He is relentless. His promises always stand. They are never ignored, forgotten or left unfulfilled. His Word will always be accomplished.
God chose Moses to fulfill His promise to Abraham. What an incredible honor. Even though it seemed as if it would never happen, God was always preparing for this great deliverance and incredible transfer of power. God knew Moses.
As we pursue His Glory, we will continually be challenged to step toward our destiny. To the degree we experience His Glory we will be transformed more into His likeness. Through Glory we are constantly being upgraded to be able to handle more responsibility for God.
Moses questioned his own qualifications for the assignment. “Who will listen to me?” he asked. God answered, “I will be with you every step of the way. When you have accomplished all that, I will bring you back to this mountain to begin Phase 2.”
Please note, that God didn’t explain to Moses about the 10 Commandments, the 40 years in the wilderness or the ultimate extent of his responsibility. He just said, “I’ll meet you back here when you’re done.” God will always share with you all that you need to know for the next step in your divine adventure. But, don’t expect any un-needed information even when you would really like to know.
We just say “yes".
