The Lord Declares, “I AM WHO I AM”
Exodus 3:13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”
Exodus 3:14-15 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” 15 Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’
“I AM WHO I AM” is a translation of the Hebrew phrase "Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh" and signifies God's self-existence, eternal nature, and absolute power. He is not defined by anything outside of himself.
When God says "I am that I am," he is telling Moses that He is the One who Is, the One Who always exists, and the One Who is in complete control. This phrase is often interpreted as a statement about God's self-sufficiency and transcendence, meaning He is not dependent on anything else to be who he is.
God declares that Who He is shall be a memorial to all generations. A memorial is something we look to as a reminder of heroic deeds, like a war memorial or a statue to a great hero. 400 years had passed for Israel while waiting for their deliverance from Egypt. Every generation needs a revelation of God - “I AM WHO I AM” is a declaration from God that He always keeps His word. That He is uninfluenced by whatever man can do. Nothing is too hard for Him.
He is God for all generations - from Abraham to Moses to us. He never changes. He is full of energy and relentless in the pursuit of His purpose. His identity in no way depends on my thoughts or opinions about Him. He is complete in Himself. He is uncreated, has no beginning and has no end. There is no greater truth beside than Him. He is utterly, completely absolute in His being. He is our God.
