DAY 12 - January 16 - In the Spirit
Revelation 1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, 11 saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last”
To be, “in the Spirit,” is a particular way to describe a particular experience. Every Believer is given access to be in the Presence of God. So, in this sense we could often be in the Spirit. However, What John describes in Revelations is another level of awareness and interaction with the unseen realm.
To be, “In the Spirit”, in this way does not happen accidentally or as a casual encounter. We can be in a place (I can be in Kansas or not in Kansas anymore). We can be in a set of circumstances (I am in trouble). We can be in a state or condition (I was in a coma). We can be in any number of places, conditions or circumstances, but in every case there is one common factor. In every case, we are having a particular experience. To be “In” something means something is happening to us, around us or in us.
John was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day. It was not a continuous condition for him, or why bring attention to it? But it was something that he experienced regularly. Usually, on the Lord’s day, but probably at other times as well. John was in exile, so he had a lot of time on his hands to pray.
Would we like to be “In the Spirit,” too? We can be. But, in the same way we prepare for a trip, we need to get ready for an encounter in the Spirit. The Lord is always expecting us for a visit. All we have to do is close our eyes, quiet our breathing, invite His presence to fill our awareness and then open our heart. Sometimes we read scripture and dwell on what we read. Sometimes we sing or speak in tongues, But always there is an atmosphere of anticipation.
If you are able to maintain this attitude of receptivity and quiet without falling fully asleep you will most like experience His Presence in a deeply personal and meaningful way. He may speak to you. He may give you inspiration or wisdom. You will receive something from Him. Even if you fall asleep in this state, you are likely to have a significant dream. Your ability to host His Presence does not end when you fall asleep.
In this special place you may receive a vision, you may be taken somewhere in the Spirit, or you may have a visitation. Don’t be afraid, it’s part of your inheritance. You are invited. How many times in scripture are you encouraged to seek His face? Make a regular practice of pressing the boundaries of your present experience in God. There is one thing I am sure about; there is always more of God to know about.
Psalms 27:8 When You said, “Seek My face,”
My heart said to You, “Your face, LORD, I will seek.”
Psalms 34:4 I sought the LORD, and He heard me,
And delivered me from all my fears.
Proverbs 8:17 I love those who love me,
And those who seek me diligently will find me.
Isaiah 26:9 With my soul I have desired You in the night,
Yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early;
For when Your judgments are in the earth,
The inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
Jeremiah 29:13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
Matthew 13:45-6 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
Luke 12:29-31 “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.
2 Corinthians 12:1-4 It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord: 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know such a man—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— 4 how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
