DAY 11 - January 15 - Welcome Holy Spirit
2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
In the Old Testament, the name for God is YHWH. The Tetragrammaton (Greek for "four letters") refers to the unspeakable name of God. It is so holy the Jews would not utter it, using instead the four letters “YHWH” to represent “The Name”. Whenever you see the LORD in all caps in the Old Testament, it refers to YAHWEH or “The Name”. In the New Testament, the greek word, Kyrios, is understood to refer to YAHWEH, The LORD GOD.
When Paul declares that the LORD is the Spirit. He is making a blockbuster statement that confirms the reality of the Trinity and at the same time elevates the presence of the Spirit of Christ inside every Believer to the level of incredible holiness and immeasurable grace. It’s a profound truth and deserves a “selah” pause to reflect on what it means.
Wherever the Spirit is, there is freedom. That’s not debatable. That reality is not conditional or intermittent. When God shows up, so does freedom. We cannot have true freedom without God being present. When He is present, all things are possible.
Freedom, in this sense, is the ability to become all that we are meant to become in Christ without hindrance. It does not mean we get to do whatever we want to do. It means we are free to fully express the Spirit of Christ through our life and relationships as we were designed to do.
Coming to Him with an unveiled face refers to the practice of Moses, who hid his face from the Israelites to cover the Glory radiating from him. He retained the veil even after the Glory began to fade. We come to God as we are, without pretense, to be transformed to His likeness in ever-increasing measure, from one degree of glory to another.
Looking in a mirror usually shows us our own reflection. But in this case, when we look in the mirror, we see the Glory of the Lord working in us a transformation that is continuously bringing forth His likeness in us.
Corinthian mirrors were widely popular. They were made from polished bronze. These mirrors were high quality, but were known to present a somewhat distorted image, like looking into water to see your reflection. It is a clear image, but not an exact image. When we look at the Glory in the mirror we are also seeing our own face. It is a little fuzzy, so we might get confused as to what we are looking at -His glory or our own face. That’s just what He wants. He has claimed us so completely that He is able to display His glory reflected in our face. This Glory will not fade with time but only grow brighter and brighter.
Ephesians 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
2 Corinthians 4:6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.
MEDITATION
• Look at your face in the mirror. Spend a few minutes and really examine what you are seeing. Accept your face. Now imagine there is Glory in the mirror shining forth from your face. What does glory look like when it radiates out of your familiar face?
• Think about the LORD GOD, the Spirit of Christ coming to abide with you and in you. What an incredible reality.
• Think about the relationship between Spirit, Freedom, Glory and Transformation. How do these truths interact in your life and work together?
