Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: “So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.” Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.” For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. Hebrews 4:1-11
The Discipline of Rest
WHAT DOES REST REALLY LOOK LIKE?
Rest is not inactivity
Rest is strongly associated with our faith and obedience.
Rest is transaction whereby we receive the promises of God to us.
Rest is only possible when we believe.

FAITH AND REST
Rest comes from the realization that Jesus has broken death and defeated hell. We are justified by faith through grace when we accept His righteousness as our own. FAITH IN RESURRECTION.
Entering His rest is compared to the faith required to apprehend the promised land (Hebrews 4). The promised victory was given as part of inheritance. The battles fought to conquer Canaan were not work, they were faith and obedience receiving promise.
Effort does not receive the victory standing does. We train to learn the skill and capacity for rulership. We reign from rest through the victory of Christ. TRAINING AND REST GO TOGETHER.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Ephesians 6:13
The authority of our Sonship is released when we step toward maturity. Mature sons co-labor with Christ through rest. ABIDING AND UNION
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. John 15:4-5
For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. Colossians 2:9
The Sabbath Rest
THE LORD OF THE SABBATH
And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath. Mark 2:27-28
Jesus healed on the Sabbath, not because He didn’t honor it. But, because He considered deliverance and healing to be the true goal of Sabbath rest.
Then He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” Matthew 12:11-12
The Lord then answered him and said, “Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” Luke 13:15-16
WHY CAN’T WE REST?
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, “They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’ So I swore in My wrath, “They shall not enter My rest.’ ” Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God... Hebrews 3:7-12
Position and identity - who He is and who we are. The context of our relationship is defined by Jesus. More important than His position a Creator or Judge is His position as Father to us. This self-revelation is key to all our interactions with Him. If He is our Father then we are his sons, his children. Everyone is God’s creation. Only the ones who choose Him are called His children.
And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? Hebrews 3:18
UNREST COMES FROM UNBELIEF AND DISOBEDIENCE. All the effort we expend to save ourselves is rooted in the belief that Jesus is not enough or that I am unworthy of His salvation and rescue.
For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end. Hebrews 3:14
CONFIDENCE IS THE BEGINNING OF REST. I trust His Word and promises that He will accomplish all that He said He would in my life.
For thus says the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength..." Isaiah 30:15
WHEN HE FINISHED HIS WORK HE SAT DOWN. The work is done but it doesn't look like it. There's is clean-up to do. The grace is there for every victory.
And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 10:11-14
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Psalm 37:7
Rest For Our Souls
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matt. 11:28-29
Mature sons have learned how to cease from their work and rest in.
Everything we do is to be from the place of abiding- From our connection to His life and victory.
I am in Christ and He is in me. There is a union (To be yoked is a metaphor for marriage and oneness)
