But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise (train) yourself toward godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-8
The Discipline of Prayer
Devotional prayer is the habit of prayer - but prayer can be more.
Prayer can make us feel better. But that is not the only reason we should pray.
Rather than a religious practice it can become a partnership with god that changes things around us.
The Power of Prayer
DESPERATE, PREVAILING PRAYER
-Always pray from hope - even when everything seems To be going the other way.
As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations” in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, “So shall your descendants be.” Romans 4:17-18
-Intense opposition can erode the strength of our heart unless we are clear about who God is and who we are.
Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart. Luke 18:1
-Even a wicked judge is responsive to a relentless cry of desperate need - (shameless nagging)
He said: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, “Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, “Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ” Luke 18:2-5
-Fill your heart with hHs goodness not just getting the answer you want. That way you will not be deceived or misled by any false belief or wrong direction. Anyone can get it wrong sometime.
Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:6-8
EFFECTIVE, FERVENT PRAYER
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:13-16
-Pray in community and with leaders.
-Pray with vulnerability and honesty.
-What we pray in Christ is powerful and effective (the prayer of the righteous.
BIBLICAL INTERCESSION - TO STAND IN THE GAP
Stand where the breach is in the wall of protection or break open the barrier of resistance
-Principles of intercession
So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Ezekiel 22:30
Therefore He said that He would destroy them, had not Moses His chosen one stood before Him in the breach, to turn away His wrath, lest He destroy them. Psalm 106:23
So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim (The Lord /Master of Breakthrough). 2 Samuel 5:20
-God Shares His Heart with Abraham because of Trust and Friendship
Responsiblity of ruling is mercy / judgement
And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him… Genesis 18:17-19
Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” So the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?” So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.” And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?” So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.” Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?” So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?” So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.” Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” So the LORD went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place. Genesis 18:22-33
-God allowed Abraham to partner with himself by granting influence to him through intercession.
-Abraham stopped asking before God stopped granting mercy - God started the negotiations and Abraham ended them. He stopped at the limit of his revelation about God’s love.
